ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Join Clinical Herbalist, Erika Galentin, for part 1 of a 2-part series that delves into the language of traditional Western herbalism and how this language is used to experience, describe, and apply the qualities, actions, and effects of herbs. Learn how this language has also been traditionally used to conceptualize larger patterns of health and imbalance in the human body. Whether being used to desbcribe a body, process, or activity of an herb, Western herbal enegetic language can also often be reflected in concepts provided by modern medical science and pharmacology. In this way, Western herbal energetics provides a well-rounded understanding about how to safely and appropriately match herbs and people.

PART 1: ELEMENTS & HUMORS (JANUARY 27, 2018)

In Part 1 of this workshop we will be covering concepts used in modern Western herbalism which are derived from traditional Hippocratic and Galenic medical models (Greco-Roman tradition). We will be discussing the four elements, four humors, and four temperaments and how these axises can provide a strong, yet metaphorical structure for understanding how to use herbs in support of balance/imbalance in the human body, mind, & spirit. We will be tasting selected herbs in the form of herbal infusions which demonstrate many of these energetic concepts through direct physical experience.

PART 2: TISSUE STATES (MARCH 3, 2018)

In Part 2 of this workshop we will add to galenic / humoral energetic model from Part 1 through discussing the 'tissue state model' developed in the late 19th to early 20th century in colonial America and its application to modern Western herbalism. The tissue state model, derived from the work of J.M Thurston (1900) of the Physiomedical tradition and built upon by contemporary herbalists such as A.W. & L.R. Priest (UK), Christopher Menzies-Trull (UK), & Matthew Wood (USA), adds an additional axis (stimulating - relaxing) to the Humoral / Galenic model (hot-cold / moist - dry) whereby six different 'tissue states' are represented (irritation - depression / atony - stagnation / constriction - relaxation) which can can provide a strong, yet metaphorical structure for understanding how to use herbs in support of balance/imbalance in the human body, mind, & spirit. We will be tasting selected herbs in the form of herbal infusions which demonstrate many of these energetic concepts through direct physical experience.

ABOUT ERIKA GALENTIN, MNIMH, RH (AHG):

Erika is a Clinical Herbalist and an ITEC certified Clinical Aromatherapist consulting from Sovereignty Herbs in Athens & Columbus, OH. She holds a degree in Herbal Medicine from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK and Scottish School of Herbal Medicine, Glasgow, UK. She is a professional member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists(UK) and the American Herbalists Guild (USA). She is also a proud member of Pi Alpha Xi National Honor Society in Horticulture (USA).

A decade of clinical practice has provided a platform for a deep and influential understanding of the efficacy of medicinal plants within a clinical environment. It is through this clinical practice that Erika is able encourage positive, learned relationships between plants and people. She is a firm believer in celebrating the role humanity plays in the ecology of our landscapes and that our relationships with the natural world should be based upon reciprocity and exchange. In addition to clinical practice, Erika is both a student and teacher of horticulture and native medicinal plant conservation and ecology.

Erika is also deeply passionate about the history of botanical medicine in the United States as depicted by the American Botanical Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and has built her clinical philosophy around the principles and practice of Physiomedical and Eclectic traditions.

With her dedication to medicinal plants native to Ohio and the Greater Appalachian region, Erika teaches, lectures and writes on native medicinal plant conservation and applied ecology, propagation, herbalism, and clinical efficacy. Former Course Development Director for the Herbal Academy, Erika is a guest instructor at the Ohio Herb Education Center, Gahanna, Ohio, Faculty at the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine, Lowgap, NC, and Course Contributor for the School of Aromatic Studies. She also participates as a member of the Stewardship Committee for Appalachia Ohio Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of land and water in Southeast Ohio.
